Cypress semiconductor is now sampling the first usb 2.0 controller chip, called the ez-usb fx2. The chip will be priced at us$8.25-$9.75 in volume. Drivers for the new usb standard are expected to be available by the end of q1 for windows 2000, and in q3 or q4 for windows 95 and 98. As for chipset integration, via chipsets are expected to arrive first, with intel chipsets with usb 2.0 integrated showing up in the next 6 months. Until both manufacturers ship their integrated chipsets in volume, usb 2.0 will move relatively slowly to pc motherboards, with 5-10 million units expected in 2001 and 50 million expected in 2002.

Rob's opinion the big question is how many dedicated usb 2.0 ports we'll see on systems. If you plug non-compliant usb 1.x devices into usb 2.0, it will slow down the speed of the bus.

Also, usb 2.0 peripherals aren't expected for some time now, so if you are limited to daisy-chaining old peripherals in usb 2.0 slots, you will not get the full speed benefits. Interestingly, cypress mentions that usb 2.0 will be used for “mass storage, printers, scanners, networking and video.” use of usb 2.0 for video seems natural, as it has a high enough bandwidth, similar to that of the firewire protocol at 400 mbps and with newer versions of firewire arriving next at 800 mbps. Firewire was built for video as it was updated, and usb 2.0 will have to go through some growing pains if it hopes to become the pc video standard. First of all, it's possible that vendors will not bother offering usb 2.0 ports on their digital camcorders, while firewire already has a strong foothold, with the majority of macs shipping standard with firewire ports and pci firewire cards relatively cheap for pcs. It took a while for usb 1.x to catch on, and you could argue that it was basically a failure in the pc marketplace. It works most of the time, but never evolved to the plug-and-play standard that it could have been with more throughput and better device recognition (in windows: install drivers, reboot, then connect device).

2002 is the real starting point for usb 2.0, and it's got a lot of ground to cover. For example, most pcs today still ship with ps/2 keyboard and mouse connections, due to cost. Now, the new usb port will be even more expensive. How to create license key for a software in vb6 array size php.

Ps/2 will be around for a long time, as will firewire. User comments 33 comment(s) improving the wheel (8:55pm est wed jan 31 2001) when usb came out, i did not see the real use of it: i already had a keyboard and mouse and modem and a scsi card and an ethernet card and printer port and a tv card with video input.

So, what i really needed was a usb port to do all of that stuff again? I could use the irq more than anything usb could do for me, so i see usb2 as an improvement to a cure without a problem. I guess it might appeal to me if i didn't already have all of the above mentioned items.

– by carl leweke weird question (9:16pm est wed jan 31 2001) i had somebody ask me this the other day and i didn't know the answer. Since usb only uses one irq it can save on multiple irq's for other motherboard related perhiphals. It's really hard to predict however where video will go with usb 2.0, i guess if hardware manfacturer's wanted to be really smart they would adopt both formats (firewire) on ther video devices – by n/a usb free's up tons of irq's (9:21pm est wed jan 31 2001) i can easily see a move in the near future to only place usb ports on new motherboard designs and to tottally drop ps/2 connectors, lpt1 ect. Usb is easy and with 2.0 much better in speed.
