“Cinderella” is a 112-minute elaboration of ’s 2,500-word story, with most of the fairy-tale magic left intact, but with the addition of a backstory and realistic motives. There’s a whole family history in this one, and there are political elements, too, not just a handsome prince, but a good king and also a grand duke and other lords. The curious thing about this new “Cinderella” is that every old and familiar element is done beautifully. The visit of the fairy godmother, the magical accoutrements (carriage, horses, glass footwear) and the grand ball itself all have an air of enchantment. When Cinderella shows up on her big night, her blue dress glows, and it really does feel as if this movie, so long in taking off, has been worth the wait. Yet one addition works well.

Early in the film, Cinderella’s mother — her lovely real mother — leaves her with some dying instructions, to “have courage and be kind.” This is nicely used throughout the film, not only as a recurring motif but also as a touchstone of ’ performance in the title role. It is what makes Cinderella more than just a doormat, and it informs her encounters with the prince. She is always very kind, but there’s no diffidence about her.

She might not quite know that she’s the heroine of a beloved fairy tale, but she knows she’s somebody. But then the foundation of her self-esteem was laid in childhood.

Her family wasn’t royal, but there was definitely some old money going on there. Mom doted on her, and Dad never came home from a business trip without bringing home a present. Thus, years later, after Dad married a flashy widow () and brought two ghastly stepsisters into the mix, Cinderella didn’t see their nasty behavior as a reflection on her. Rather, she wondered what was wrong with them. The elevation of the stepmother from someone mean and stupid to the intelligent, cruel woman of Blanchett’s performance is probably the most interesting thing in the movie — in the sense of being interesting to talk about — and yet it’s too specific. One of the great things about fairy tales is their suggestion of deep and general truths concerning such things as random stupidity, cruelty and irrationality. With an actress of Blanchett’s stature, the temptation to literalize that general principle into a flesh-and-blood tragic case must have been overwhelming.

But it should have been resisted. Maxsea. Besides, this is a children’s film, and children don’t care about stepmother angst.

Nor do they really want to sit still for 112 minutes. This is hardly a scientific survey, but the two kids sitting behind me kept telling Mommy they wanted to go home. But they didn’t say that during the ball scene. By the way, though the point of Branagh’s “Cinderella” is that courage and kindness eventually triumph, Perrault had a different idea. He said that all the virtue in the world might fail without the blessing of a fairy godmother or godfather. Yes, 300 years ago, Perrault knew the importance of leverage.

Starring Lily James, and Cate Blanchett. Directed by Kenneth Branagh. 112 minutes.).

'Have courage, be kind.' This film is incredible. Cinderella is an amazing remake of the 1950 cartoon. Ella 'Cinderella' was never an ordinary girl and when her father marries a rich widow with two mean and ugly daughters, everything changes. Cinderella has to cook, clean and tend to her stepsisters and is always treated like a servant, and when an invitation to a royal ball arrives at their doorstep, her life is about changes drastically. Cinderella is forced to stay at the home while her sisters attempt to win over the prince. She is saved from a night of misery by her fairy godmother who makes her dream of going to the ball a reality.
